PRESS RELEASE: 23/11/2005

Inition stage explosive 3D finale to £1million car show

Inition deployed a number of new technologies for a large-scale stereoscopic  3D projection for the MPH '05 show at Birmingham's NEC and London's Earl's Court. MPH is a unique concept that combines a display of the finest cars on the planet and a stage show hosted by Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and Tiff Needell. BAFTA award winning set designer John Napier (famed set designer of Cats and Les Miserables) again called upon Inition's 3D services after a successful collaboration with stereoscopic sequences in Starlight Express, currently touring the UK.

During the finale of the show, the brain-child of Julian Napier, a virtual Apache Gunship chased a real Lotus Exige around the set firing missiles and bullets in a follow-up to a similar stunt seen on BBC 2's Top Gear. The show climaxed with Jeremy Clarkson blowing the gunship out of the air with a shoulder-mounted 'missile launcher'. The set-piece blurred the boundaries of real and virtual and had the audience ducking and diving for cover as missiles and pieces of helicopter debris flew over their heads.

The 40ft wide projection, the largest digital 3D projection ever done in the UK, utilised two 18K lumen DLP projectors from XL Video and Inition's 3DVidBoxHD uncompressed stereo playback server. It was also the first time Inition deployed a brand new polarising filter technology that increases light transmission by more than 50% over standard polarising filters to acheive a super-bright image from a single pair of projectors on such a large screen.

Inition's Creative Director Andy Millns was in attendance to oversee the stereoscopic projection and make sure it ran flawlessy, which it did for all 20 shows to a combined audience of over 70,000.
